Museums

Wendy Clark photo

The Farnsworth Center for the Wyeth Family, in Rockland, is made up of several buildings: a wing of the Farnsworth Art Museum and a renovated 19th century church (pictured above). More about the Wyeth Family legacy in Maine.
Mainers love their history and their art, and they seem to have a lot of trouble throwing things away. The result is a lot of museums in the state, displaying everything from fine artworks to the 19th century ways of life of a logging family. With perpetually significant maritime ties, one can expect all manner of museums devoted to the trades of the sea, both past and present. There are several 'discovery' museums, featuring unique interactive displays designed to intrigue and challenge the little ones. Yankee history runs deep in these parts, and nearly every town has its own historical center brimming with genealogial records and local artifacts. And as you look around -- at Maine's architecture, it's small town way of life and serene coastal villages -- you see that history and beauty are ever present and all around us.
