No hayrides or amusement houses, these are the "real thing" — Maine places reported to have spirits or other paranormal activity.


Western Cemetery
Western Promenade, Portland
At least one person has claimed to have detected spirits in the city's old cemetery. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, one thing's for sure: The place can be creepy.

Biddeford City Theater
205 Main St., Biddeford
New York opera singer Eva Gray sang her last song on the stage of the Biddeford City Theater on Oct. 31, 1904 — Halloween night. After her performance ("Good-bye, Little Girl, Good-bye"), she left the stage, collapsed and died. Patrons swear that ever since her death, her spirit has haunted the theater.

Site of Al Brady shootout
Central Street, Bangor
Notorious gangster Al Brady and one of his cohorts, Clarence Lee Shaffer Jr., were gunned down by FBI agents on Central Street in Bangor on Oct. 12, 1937. The two, along with Rhuel James Dalhover, were tracked down after trying to buy a Tommy gun at Dakin's Sporting Goods Co. (Dalhover was later executed.)

The spirits of the men are said to haunt the area. A plaque outside of Friars Bakehouse, at 21 Central Street, marks the place of the shooting and Brady's body lies in an unmarked grave in Mount Hope Cemetery, also in Bangor.

Anderson Cemetery
River Road, Windham
There's something about the Anderson Cemetery in Windham that just gives people the chills. According to some, it's spirits going bump in the night.

Captain Lindsey House
5 Lindsey St., Rockland
The Captain Lindsey House is one of a few Maine inns that members of the Paranormal Association of Maine have visited. They claim that Captain Lindsey and 35 other spirits, including T.B. Severence, who purchased the inn from Lindsey in 1857, haunt the place.

The Limerock Inn
96 Limerock St., Rockland
Members of the Paranormal Association of Maine who visited the inn that was once the home of a doctor claim to have felt the presence of those who had sat in the waiting room years ago.

Berry Manor Inn
81 Talbot Ave., Rockland
Paranormal experts say they've seen ghosts greeting them through the windows. According to the inn's owner, the guests didn't seem to mind.

Nordica Auditorium
University of Maine at Farmington
According to legend, 19th century opera singer and Maine native Lilian Nordica haunts the auditorium named for her. Some claim to have heard her singing.

Boothbay Opera House
Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor
An unknown spirit is said to inhabit one of the rooms on the second floor. Some say the spirit is none other than Earl Cliff, a piano player who performed there in the early 1900s.

Ogunquit Playhouse
10 Main St., Ogunquit
There's something about theaters that seems to attract spirits to them, isn't there? Some claim to have seen Revolutionary War soldiers on the grounds of this one.

Many believe that the Biddeford City Theater is haunted by Eva Gray, an opera singer who died at the theater on Halloween night, 1904. The theater is just one of many places in Maine people claim are haunted.
